on Adventure TIme

ongoing since 06.21.25

I wanted to log my experience with watching Adventure Time for the first time somewhere, so I figured I could make a journal entry out of it! SPOILERS, from here on down.

First entry, originally from my Currently page:

We're currently watching Adventure Time! I never watched this show in my youth, but she did, so now it's my turn to go into an unknown show. I actually really, really like it, and I see how younger kids loved this show and why adults my age also love this show. It's very heartfelt and sweet, despite also being a silly adventure show. It's quirky, both in its world and its characters. I love it. Trying to remember what episode we're on is failing me, but I know we're in the third season. As far as I know, Finn is totally aromantic, and maybe a little asexual too? I'm not sure if it sticks, but I kind of hope it does? It's an interesting trait for a main character that rescues female-presenting beings to have, and I like that a lot, haha. He's also young and ambivalent, so that could also be a reason why.

Landed on the fifth season today, and things are totally getting good. Finn's dismissal of Princess Bubblegum because of age and him fawning over Flame Princess has been crazy to watch play out. I think him having a crush on Flame Princess makes sense, despite me thinking that Finn was aroace. He's just a young boy trying to figure himself out, that's all. I love when the show delved into that a lot, and I bet that was nice to see live on TV as well.

I can tell that Finn and Jake's dynamic is changing a bit, especially evident towards the end of the season. They're still bros, but their paths are starting to diverge a bit. Jake is spending a lot more time with Rainicorn now that he's a dad (wild), and he's made a friend in a room outside of time and space. I have a feeling that Jake is going to move on to bigger and better things, leaving Finn to figure life out on his own. He won't be apart from him forever, but Jake is definitely going to have to make a choice between something big or Finn. I'm curious to see where that leads!

Ice King's relationship to Marceline is quite cool too, no pun intended. I have a lot of questions (like how did baby Marcy end up away from her dad in the Nightosphere?) but I'm sure that'll get answered eventually... I can hope, at least. I'm glad Ice King didn't straight up kidnap her though, it looked like they (sort-of) survived the end of the world together in that alternate dimension.

Speaking of which, that alternate universe Finn getting corrupted by the Ice King's crown and Jake getting corrupted into a Lich-like being was so freaky, I felt so bad. Things could have been different, but they turned out so poorly. Actual dog Jake was super cute though, I love when Jake acts like an actual dog.

Seeing them get tricked by the Lich made me so mad -- they should have been more suspicious after Finn's dream! And stealing everyone's gems... I'm glad Bubblegum was there to snap Finn out of it. Prismo as a character was super neat, though.

Overall, I am really digging where the story is heading, and I'm hoping it continues to stay upbeat and interesting!
